Specifying Outdoor Signage for Tanzania's Sun and Rain
Tanzania's climate is hard on outdoor print. The ultraviolet load at the equator is high, the rainy season is intense and the dust is abrasive. A sign that is specified for a European market can fade, lift or delaminate within a year, and the failure is usually blamed on the printer rather than on the specification.
The ink is the first variable. A solvent or a UV-curable ink with a proven lightfastness is the baseline for an outdoor sign. A cheaper ink can look correct on delivery and fade within months, particularly in a strong colour like red or blue.
The coating is the second. A UV protective laminate or a liquid coating adds a layer between the ink and the sun, and it is the cheapest insurance in the specification. A sign that is laminated for outdoor use will outlast an unlaminated sign by years, and the cost difference is small relative to the replacement.
The substrate is the third. A PVC banner, a rigid acrylic, an aluminium composite and a coated steel are different products with different lifespans and different fixing requirements. The specification should name the substrate, the thickness and the finish, not only the size.
The installation is the fourth. A sign that is fixed with the wrong bracket will flap in the wind, and a sign that is sealed incorrectly will trap water. The fixing and the sealing are part of the specification, and the supplier should state them.
The maintenance is the fifth. A sign should be inspected after the rainy season, cleaned with a non-abrasive product and repaired at the first sign of lifting. A maintenance contract is cheaper than a replacement, and it keeps the brand looking consistent.
The specification should be written for the climate, not copied from a template. A buyer who asks for UV coating, a named substrate and a sealed fixing will get a sign that lasts, and a buyer who asks for a banner will get a banner.

Specifying Outdoor Signage for Tanzania's Sun and Rain — questions answered
Why does outdoor signage fade so quickly in Tanzania?
The ultraviolet load is high and the rain is intense. An ink without lightfastness and a print without UV coating can fade or lift within a year.
Is lamination worth the cost?
Yes for outdoor work. A UV protective laminate or coating is a small cost relative to the replacement, and it adds years to the sign.
What substrate should I specify?
It depends on the application: PVC banner for temporary, acrylic or aluminium composite for a rigid fascia, coated steel for a structural sign. Name the substrate and the thickness.
